Old Holiday Traditions
Whenever winter is just around the corner, chocolate lovers need something to warm their taste buds. This is why holiday time is perfect for enjoying all types of chocolatey treats! But have you ever wondered about where the candy-related traditions that surround our holidays originated?
Gold foil-covered chocolate coins are associated with two holiday traditions. First, they were used to celebrate the generous bishop, known as Saint Nicholas, who was said to have given coins to the less fortunate children in his city. This gave rise to the modern tradition in multiple parts of the world of filling stockings with chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Chocolate coins are also traditionally given out as geld (or money) to Jewish children during the Hanukkah season.
These Christian and Jewish golden coin stories are centuries old and celebrate sagas of bravery and liberation while inspiring a love of chocolate in the younger generations.

4 Chocolate-centric Traditions to Indulge in
Chocolate is a treat that is enjoyed year round, but it holds a special place in our hearts with these four chocolate filled holiday traditions.
Holiday baking can be very rewarding, whether you treasure the joy of creating or simply appreciate eating! This season, mix up a batch of Wilbur Cocoa Cookies (recipe below), spread a little extra icing on your homemade treats, or get inventive with your family recipes!
Wilbur Cocoa Cookies
Cream the sugar and shortening together, add the milk slowly, and then the well-beaten eggs; add the Wilbur Dutch processed cocoa. Sift two cups of flour and the baking powder together, add to the mixture. Add enough flour to make it hold together. Dust bake-board with flour and place thereon a third of the dough, roll out 1/4 inch thick; cut with fancy cake cutter. Bake in hot oven 12 to 15 minutes. ~ This old recipe dates back to the 1920s. Cookies were often kept fresh by being stored in stone crocks year-round.
Sipping hot cocoa inside and out
Whether you enjoy wandering through Lititz Springs Park or strolling to the Wilbur Chocolate Store in downtown Lititz, accompany your outing with a cup of Wilbur Hot Cocoa. Don’t forget to put your hot cocoa in a thermos to keep it nice and hot! Our hot cocoa recipe also goes great with cozy nights spent indoors by the fireplace.
