Wilbur Chocolate Store History:
The Wilbur Chocolate Store started as a space in the factory where employees could purchase the chocolate they manufactured in smaller sizes and amounts a few days per week. This idea grew in popularity and in 1972, the doors opened to the local community to include the sale of the beloved Wilbur Buds and other Wilbur chocolates. The store space included an area named the Candy Americana® Museum. This unique addition was created by Penny Buzzard, wife of former Wilbur® Chocolate President John Buzzard. Penny was passionate about the chocolate and candy industry and went to antique shows and flea markets looking for old chocolate memorabilia. She gathered more than 1,000 varieties of moulds, tins, and boxes to display in the museum spaced she developed. Business associates, who learned of her efforts, began to contribute pieces such as: early candy machinery, marble slabs, starch trays and copper kettles. The prized museum collection also included a large, unique collection of antique, hand-painted European and Asian porcelain chocolate pots, some bearing the names of Haviland, Limoges, and Dresden.
In 1977, the Wilbur candy kitchen was opened. The kitchen featured handmade chocolate candies being created right before your eyes! Chocolate candy favorites include handmade marshmallows, almond bark, peanut butter meltaway, heavenly hash, mint drizzle, and almond butter crunch to name a few.
Today, the Wilbur Chocolate Store remains a wonderful place to visit, shop, and learn about the world of chocolate and get a glimpse into the rich history of the confectionery industry! Every visitor is welcome to a free Wilbur Bud chocolate sample. The store is a special place to enjoy when planning your trip to beautiful Lititz, PA, which is located in the heart of Lancaster County.
